I have fond memories of my father listening to Drew Pearson's Sunday evening radio show during the late 1050s. My youthful curiosity caused me to also listen because Drew Pearson always sounded as if he had something extremely important to say. Furthermore, he often made predictions which gave him the aura of a prophet. Thus when I saw that this book had been recently published I decided I needed to read it for old time's sake.From 1932 until his death in 1969 Pearson had a daily "Washington Merry-Go-Round" column that was carried in many newspapers nationwide. He shared the byline with Robert Allen prior to WWII and with Jack Anderson after the war. He developed a reputation for delivering news about political plans and scandals that were not intended to be public. Consequently he became widely feared and hated by people in positions of power and influence. Because of his inclination to go public with less that fully confirmed information he occasionally got things wrong, but his news and predictions were correct with sufficient frequency to be noticed.He was sued hundreds of times during his career, but only lost once in a case that could have probably been won on appeal, but other considerations made settlement prudent. Pearson actually welcomed being called a muckraker. His column continued through seven presidencies from Hoover to Nixon, and they all called him a liar at some point during their terms. Eisenhower was sort of an exception since he made a practice of publicly ignoring Pearson, so his expressions of displeasure were generally given within private circles.I was surprised to learn that Pearson was a Quaker. It's interesting to note that the two presidents with whom he most seriously clashed were Hoover and Nixon, both of whom also had Quaker backgrounds. I also found it interesting that Pearson's grandfather was from Kansas.Pearson generally favored progressive and liberal politics and often showed support for FDR's New Deal, Truman's Fair Deal, and Johnson's War of Poverty. He seemed particularly close to Lindon Johnson, and Pearson's papers are now archived at Johnson's Presidential Library.Reading this book is in many ways like reliving American political history from the 1930s to the 1960s. For me it provided some needed humanizing information to roundoff my personal mythic impressions that carried over from those 1950s radio broadcasts.
